What Is TMJ?

Your TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the hinge joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. When this joint becomes inflamed, it can cause a variety of negative issues, including:

  • Jaw pain or pain in the face, head, neck or shoulder area when you speak, yawn or chew
  • Mouth gets stuck in the open or closed position (lockjaw)
  • Popping or clicking noises when opening or closing the mouth
  • Headaches or earaches
  • Unable to open the mouth widely

What Causes TMD?

While we do not know what exactly causes TMJ disorder, or TMD, we do know that contributing factors include:

  • Clenching or Grinding Teeth
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Trauma

TMD Treatment

If you are experiencing any TMD symptoms, it is important that you report them to Dr. Harper immediately. Dr. Harper is FAGD qualified with over 1,200 hours of continuing education, and attended The Dawson Academy, a leading training facility for occlusion studies and TMJ education.
